The National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) is an autonomous research institution funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Institute was established in the year 1998 with the objective of conducting and promoting research of high caliber in basic and applied areas of plant science and agricultural biology. Post-genomic era has witnessed a quantum leap in the biological research, at both the cellular and systems levels. In this context, NIPGR is uniquely placed for its sole thrust on research in plant genomics. Through its infrastructural base for academia-industry interactions and knowledge based resources, NIPGR is poised to contribute towards frontier areas of Plant Biology. All biology research has been permeated by genomics and as a result new ways of understanding plant life and tailoring crops by genetic enhancement are emerging. NIPGR aims to contribute in the achievements of such hopes arising out of current pace of genomics research. The research programmes at NIPGR are aimed at understanding the structure, expression and function of genes in plant genomes, and use this understanding of plant genes/genomes to genetically improve crops for high yields and better quality.
To generate new knowledge in the area of plant biology, assimilate it with current knowledge, and translate the same for genetic enhancement of plants for social benefits.
To undertake, aid, promote, guide and coordinate research of high caliber in basic and applied plant molecular biology.
Research Activities
The research activities of the Institute are carried out in the frontier areas of Plant Biology
such
as Computational Biology, Genome Analysis and Molecular Mapping, Molecular Mechanisms of Abiotic
Stress Responses, Nutritional Genomics, Plant Development and Architecture, Plant Immunity,
Transgenics for Crop Improvement, Molecular Breeding and other emerging areas in plant genomics,
which includes
Ph.D. Programme
The Institute has been conducting its Ph.D. programme in affiliation with Jawaharlal Nehru
University, New Delhi, since 2001. The scholars (who have JRF of CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR) are admitted
to
this programme by open competition. The selected scholars are required to do course work for a
period of one year, which is followed by research work on different areas of Plant Biology in
various laboratories.
Training Programme
Options are available for outstanding students in post-graduate programme of other Institutions
to
carry out project work under the supervision of the Institute's scientists towards partial
fulfillment of the post-graduate degree. Further, to introduce the Bachelor Degree students to
Plant
Biotechnology Research and to bridge the gap between classroom and lab, opportunities have been
made
available for short-term/summer trainees. Besides options are also available for trainees in the
Institute through sponsored programmes from Government agencies such as the KVPY, JNCASR,
INSA/IAS/NASI. Additionally, research opportunities at post-doctoral level are also available
through institutional fellowship and fellowships of other Government agencies like DBT, CSIR and
SERB etc.
The Institute has firm belief in harnessing of technologies, human values, integrity & transparency and its social responsibility.
The following committees/functionaries have been instituted at NIPGR to address the grievances of employees/students/public:
The complete details thereof have been suitably displayed on the website of the Institute (www.nipgr.ac.in) for information of all concerned under the link: About US → Committees → Institutional (internal) Committees/Designated Functionaries.
The Institute is committed to provide all possible assistance to the general public and stakeholders. The information regarding academic & research activities, tenders, jobs, infrastructure facilities, officials/nodal officers/committees etc. have been made available on the website of the Institute.
