Admission to Ph.D. Programme for 2026-2027 (Autumn Semester)
The Institution
The National Institute of Plant Genome Research is an autonomous institution under the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The InstituteтАЩs establishment coincides with the 50th anniversary of IndiaтАЩs independence as well as the birth anniversary of Prof. (Dr.) J. C. Bose. The formal announcement was made on November 30th, 1997. This Institute has already placed India among the major contributors to plant genomics.
Area of Research:
BRIC-NIPGR is conducting advanced research in the frontier areas of Plant Biology, such as Developmental Biology, Genome Analysis and Molecular Mapping, Molecular Mechanism of Abiotic Stress Responses, Plant-Microbe/Insect Interactions and Plant Immunity, Nutritional Genomics, Genetic Engineering, Genome Editing and Molecular Breeding for Crop Improvement, Computational Biology, Structure Biology, and other emerging areas in the field.
Eligibility Criteria
The Institute invites online applications from candidates who have completed 4 years BachelorтАЩs degree or M.Sc. or equivalent degree from a recognised institution in any area of in Life Sciences/Biotechnology and/or in related disciplines with minimum 55% marks [a relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% or an equivalent relaxation of grade, will be allowed for those belonging to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), and PWD, or for those who had obtained their MasterтАЩs degree prior to 19th September, 1991], and have qualified national level test for pursuing Doctor of Philosophy degree.
- Joint CSIR-UGC test for Junior Research Fellowship (CSIR/UGC JRF)
- DBT Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF)
- Any other nationally competitive fellowship offered by the Government of India, by which students are allowed to conduct research in plant biology and related fields.
- The student must have a valid fellowship for a period of 5 years.
- Candidates who have previously activated any PhD Fellowship are ineligible to apply with that fellowship.
Reservation of the seats will be as follows:
- 27% for OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 10% for EWS and 5% for person with disability (PWD) as per the reservation policy of the Government of India (with minimum disability to the extent of 40%) in pursuance of Provisions of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
- Reservation of 5% seats in respect of PWD candidates shall be done horizontally, as per the Government of India Guidelines/Policy.
- All SC/ST/OBC/EWS and PWD candidates are required to submit a certificate in respect of their claims from the authorized officers as notified by the Government of India for the purpose from time to time.
Selection Criteria:
The selection will be based on an interview/Viva-Voce.
The selected candidates will be enrolled in the Ph.D. program in academic affiliation with the Regional Center for Biotechnology, Faridabad. BRIC-NIPGR will provide hostel accommodation to selected candidates (subject to availability). The following important dates may be noted:

The application fee is `500/- (`200/- for SC/ST/PWD/EWS candidates, provided relevant documentary proof is enclosed with the Application Form). The application fee is not refundable.
